Medical advances since the turn of the milennium have made the world a
better place. Anti-viral treatments can stop the respiratory viruses
responsible for the 'common cold', but hardier stock like HIV can be
treated but not eliminated, as anti-virals become less effective with
repeated use. Genetic treatments are available for many conditions
like birth defects and cancer, though they are expensive and
time-consuming. Normal wound treatments no longer risk infection, and
synthetic skin and blood are available. A process has recently become
available that speeds the fusing of broken bones.
In the case of catastrophic loss or amputation, mechanical prosthetic
limbs that can duplicate normal functionality are available, as are
artificial organs such as heart, lung, kidney, ears and eyes. Cloned
replacements are slowly becoming available, but they are at the very
forefront of medical science.
Note: Genetic manipulation and full cloning are carefully watched for
by medical and government agencies. They are a violation of ethical
and legal laws, and the penalties are severe: loss of all professional
perks, life inprisonment, and possibly death.

Rumors of this ability - suspended animation - abound, and UNTIL is
actively involved in researching this capability to hold dangerous
criminals. Various chemicals can reduce a person's vital signs to
death point, hold them there, and return them, but there is the great
danger of correct dosage and proper interaction with blood
chemistry. No human tests have yet been conducted.

The ability of a virus to alter DNA has long been a known medical
fact. The application of this to superhumans has been slow, but also
accepted. Several superhumans are known to have been generated by
virus-engineered processes. Like most biological experiments, they
vary wildly in their successes and repeatability. With the loss of
Anti Virotics, the ability to prevent or treat these conditions has
practically vanished.

Invented by Leros Industries, and confiscated by UNTIL, this is a
process of carbonizing iron, that structures the carbon in almost
diamondlike fashion, resulting in a steel formula lighter and stronger
than all other known steel alloys. Glassteel is speculated to be one
of the alloys used in Questonite, but is still an inferior metal.

Science. Within the last five years, it has been realized on several
occasions. Once a stable neural net has been constructed, it is given
a personality imprint and then access to a knowledge bank. If all goes
well, a new AI evolves, but the process rarely succeeds. There are
less than one dozen known AIs of four thousand attempts; they are
known worldwide in the computer industry.

The term "Superhuman" is used in the world of Champions MUSH to refer
to anyone with extra-ordinary super-powers. This term is synonymous
with the many that have lately sprung up in the comic industry
(metahumans, metas, mutants, etc). In the world of CM, people with
such powers are referred to ICly as "superhumans." This is true even
of someone who's not technically a biological human being (example:
Superman). The term also refers to those who use external means to
provide their Powers (an armor suit, gadgets, etc). Basically, in game
terms, if you're built on more than 100 total points (50 + 50), you
probably fall into the category of "superhuman" (regardless of your race).

Actually, there is no such thing as "N-rays." The "N-Ray" is the
Champions term for any unusual type of electromagnetic
radiation. N-Rays include X-rays, Gamma-Rays, Beta-Rays, Alpha-Rays,
and Micro-waves, as well as any "unusual" type of electromagnetic
radiation that does not fall under the categories of Visible, IR, or
UV light, or radio waves. Basically, if the "waves" or "rays" are not
otherwise listed in NEWS POWER ENHANCED SENSES under another sense,
then they fall under the category of N-Rays. Please note that, ICly,
NO ONE ever really refers to them as N-Rays. This is just a game term.

Almost every superheroic world in the comic industry has its
own "unbreakable" ultra-hard metal. Champions is no
different. Questonite is an alloy of several metals which, when cooled
and hardened, is the hardest metal known to mankind. Questonite is
essentially "unbreakable." It can also cut through any other metal
known to mankind (steel, aluminum, iron, etc) like the proverbial hot
knife through butter, provided it has a sharpened edge. Questonite is
EXTREMELY rare and EXTREMELY expensive -- the average hero or villain
should NOT try to claim he possesses "Questonite" armor, etc. This is
only allowed by special permission of the GM and the Theme
Department. Additionally, please note that there are NO other
"ultra-hard" metals out there. The CM world does not have
"Adamantium," "Vibranium," "Inertron," etc. If your character requires
ultra-hard metals of one sort or another, we recommend that you secure
permission to use Questonite (an excellent example is Captain
America's shield, which in this world would be made of Questonite, not
an Adamantium/Vibranium Alloy).

The cosmos is an old place, full of sentient beings. Eventually, those
that met learned to get along, and decided how to deal with those of
other worlds. A world is to be avoided until it shows the capability
of leaving its own solar system. Once that happens, they are
introduced to the fact that other sentient beings exist, and the
policy becomes one of ignorance. The world must meet the established
conditions for acceptance of its own accord. No trade is allowed, and
contact is kept to absolute minimums, only when acceptance conditions
are met.
In 2014, Earth developed an FTL drive, and was contacted in
2015. First Contact was met by a superhero team called Star Guard,
with Colonial Bay local superheroine StarDancer doing translations. In
the thirty-five years that have passed, three of the thirty-seven
requirements for galactic acceptance have been met.

The general opinion of non-natives about Earth is, 'Not a very nice
place to visit, and you certainly don't want to get stuck there'. On
the other hand, the general opinion of natives as regard to other
parts of the cosmos is 'Might be a nice place to visit, if I could
ever afford to go.'
Outside interactions with Earth must go through what the locals call
'the Guild'. From Earth, all extraterrestrial actions are dealt with
by the United Earth (formerly United Nations).

and displaying text, graphical, audio, and video data. It has replaced

are impractical to use if smaller than the size of credit/debit cards.

Since 1960, superpowers have become more common and increasingly more
accepted by the public. As such, rules and regulations concerning
their use were passed. Public outcry and legal battles ensued,
finally resolving into situations that both sides could live
with. Superpowers may be voluntarily registered, with policies and
procedures similar to registering firearms. Using a superpower in the
commission of a crime increases the severity of the crime; moreso if
the superpower is unregistered. Legal code defines the use of any
superpower against the unwilling as a crime equivalent to assault. If
the superpower in question is mental or does physical harm, the charge
increases accordingly.

The proven existence of mental powers in 2003 nearly touched off a
firestorm of public panic until science stepped in. So-called 'Mental'
powers were proven to operate on a range of frequencies that most
people simply weren't equipped to deal with. This led to a short
explosion of research, warnings, litigations and public opinions that
stabilized within ten years.
The commonly known things about 'mental powers' are: People can feel
when they are being affected, and can oftentimes track the power back
to its source, even if they are not otherwise sensitive. Being
affected by mental powers leaves traces that can be proven

Vast resources are discovered in Siberia. The fractured nations
reunite into the Russia of old, which gains a ruling seat on the UN in
2017. The European Consortium officially dissolves in 2008. After the
death of Queen Elizabeth, King Charles negotiates for a unified,
independant Ireland. Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland form
the Scandanavian Trade Union. Because of the cultural similarities in
the STU, it succeeds where the EC failed. The STU launches major
inroads into underwater exploration, though the Marianis Trench
remains unconquered.

After the collapse of the oil market in 2012, the King of Saudi Arabia
launches a bloody campaign across the middle east. Isreal is offered a
peace treaty before the war starts, and in less than a year, all other
nations are conquered, and the new United Arab Empire is recognized by
the UN.

October 22, 2023, Casablanca is destroyed by a nuclear power plant
accident. The hundred mile area around the city is quarantined for 50
years. Ex-VIPER agents, and the 'new Zulu' assassinate the leaders of
six South African nations, take power, and confiscate the diamond
mines. They secure their hold by applying the Zu nation for UN status.

Starting in 2018, the nations in south and central America turn to
each other for mutual economic support. In seven years, the treaties
are reorganized into the Confederacion de Americas, an economic
alliance of all south and central America.

In 2030, a devastating earthquake strikes. The Chinese Premier and
President are among the millions killed, and the new regime panics,
closing its borders and refusing outside help. China would slowly
rebuild on its own, returning to their traditions, and becoming
isolationist. In Japan, and Taiwan rebuild with the latest
technologies, and their technological advances soon outdo those of the
rest of the world.

The appearance and commonality of superpowers since the turn of the
milennium caused society to adapt. Programs to register superhumans
were met with initial outcry, but several heroes used the registration
as a springboard to establish public identities, separate from their
private lives. This continued into formalized procedures, and
eventually passed legal scrutiny.
Registered superhero identities, after a one year period, have nearly
full legal rights. The major rights of this identity allow the hero to
testify, and protects their identity. In most cases, expanded Good
Samaritan laws exempt heroes from the responsibility of collateral
damage.
